Understanding Exposure is a good resource for, well, understanding exposure, which will help you get out of the auto modes and start using manual, which is what you really want.

I can't recommend this book enough. It comes from a film time, but all of what it teaches is still just as applicable today. Great for beginners. – Ryan Guill Dec 2 at 13:41
